Is a stepdown ring to fit a 72mm filter on 77mm diameter ok?

Is this OK to do?

Just a quick question for me today.  Thank you.

Nothing will be hurt. Except a little vignetting may show up in the corners of the image.

If you stay over the 70 mm, a slight drop of light
may be observed and less to fear from vignetting.

Can the vignetting be fixed in Photoshop afterwards?

You could eventually resolve it in your converter by applying,
on an adjustment layer, a positive vignette

You sure about that?  70mm is smaller.  Heck you will need to go 82mm on a 77mm lens to avoid vignetting.

If you are not using a wide aperture, you may not have an issue. Wide open will get you vignetting that you can crop out. Not filling the screen is a good idea since it allows more creative cropping and may exclude some distortion.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
