Some very basic newbie questions

Hello to all!

I'm a young man nearing my mid 60's - still working. I've had numerous basic cameras throughout my lifetime - I can take a photo, and sometimes they're pretty good, if I do say so myself! 

My current camera, is a Nikon D-40. I have two lenses for it, one 18-55mm which came with the package, and an add on AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED. Which I purchased as a replacement for the 18-55, but also give me a bit of a zoom. In other words, my everyday use lens.

Yesterday I purchased a new Canon 90D. I purchased only the camera base (no lenses), as I thought my current lenses would work on the new Canon.

My question is, will the lenses I currently have work with (fit) on my new Canon 90D? If not, is there an adapter that I can purchase to allow them to fit the Canon?

I'm really a novice at photography - perhaps my question is a give away? But with retirement looming the not too distant future - I would like to educate myself a little further in this hobby!

Hello Silverado,

Congratulation for the soon to be retirement! I hope you joy with everything and fun with you photography passion. 

First of all, it breaks my heart to read that nikon and canon stuff are going to be use together :P  .
But, yes you can use your nikon lenses on your canon camera. All you need is the Nikon to Canon lens adapter. You can find online on almost every camera shop.

It is important to understand that such an adapter won't connect the electronics in the lens with those in the camera.  You will lose autofocus and even aperture control if you use lenses that do not have an aperture ring.  These adapters are designed to work with the older Nikon lenses.  My advice would be to buy a newer Nikon body if you want to stay with that line or some Canon lenses if you want to stay with the Canon.  The adapter isn't really a good solution in your situation.

Your way ahead is a very bad idea IMO and experience,
I really think you should reconsider as you won't get the
best of both worlds but hell for sure.
Light is free… capturing it is not!

As stated, it is possible to use Nikon lenses on a Canon body, but you will effectively have a manual focus lens. And newer Nikon lenses do not have an aperture ring, so you would lose that ability entirely.

Your kit Nikon lenses will work on any current Nikon APS-C body, so you can simply upgrade. Or you can acquire Canon lenses. Not sure what you found attractive about the 90D, but there are plenty of Nikon products that are comparable.

For the $1200 list price of the 90D you could buy a full-frame Nikon D750 (it's on sale right now). You'd still need appropriate lenses but the D750 would open a world of options to you, including many, many older lenses that can be had for less money.

Oh, and you can use your current lenses with the D750 in DX mode, until you can acquire other (full frame) lenses.

I say stick with Nikon, but that's just me.

Return the Canon if you can and by a new Nikon body. Either that or sell all the Nikon gear to buy Canon lenses. You will never be happy trying to mix bodies and lenses.

Yes you can use Canon lenses on a Nikon with an adapter. But I highly recommend you get some Canon lenses. You can sell off the old Nikon gear and get some great second hand Canon glass which will work much better for your Canon camera.

Hmmmm - you're trying to do the equivalent of fitting a Ford V8 engine into a Toyota compact car ~ a dedicated enthusiast loving heaps of DIY stuff might do it, but more sensible heads suggest not to

Whether you stick with 100% Nikon or go 100% with Canon is up to you ~ each system has good cameras and excellent lenses... Whatever you decide will be "right"
