New guy needing some help...

Hi guys, I just joined up. Trying to improve my skills and have hit a snag...
I have a new Canon SX540 HS. One of the main things we're using it for is getting some shots of my son's high school soccer team in action.   I've been using the 540's "sports mode" during the games. I've managed to get some pretty good shots during the daylight hours, catching the guys in action, with good facial clarity, but my night time shots are horrible. I get lucky maybe every one in 100 pics but most are blurry. I was blaming it on the cooler weather possibly affecting the camera at first, but I do believe it's got more to do with the lighting.
could someone maybe give me a tip or three?
-Mike

The lens is a pretty slow lens especially when used at longer focal lengths, That requires that the camera needs a lot of light to perform properly. You are expecting too much from a camera like this one. If good sports shots at night were possible with a camera like this, people wouldn't be forking over a few thousand dollars for camera bodies and fast 2.8 lenses. That's just the reality of how things work.

What he said, above.

In short: not going to happen. My wife experienced the same when attempting to capture dance recital photos with a point and shoot. After years of frustration, I got the go-ahead to buy a DSLR and fast lens, and learn how to get photos.

A compact superzoom won't capture enough light for the required shutter speeds. Which should be quite fast. You'll need better equipment.
