Anyone who intentionally not own a telephoto lens?

I'm finding I rarely use anything above 70mm.  Just for my shooting needs don't need it.  I had lenses that cover 200mm, but just never used that end of the focal range.

Curious if anyone else stays clear of telephoto lenses too, and if so, what is your reason for doing so?

Steve not sure this will address your question. But over the years, I've learn my focal length or focal range. meaning I no longer want multi ranged lenses 70-200 etc. I'm steering more towards fixed or prime lenses and will have to adjust my location based on the image I wish to capture. But this doesn't mean I'm finished using just 2 lenses, I'm going to be searching for either a wide angle 28mm - 35mm or farther range lenses like a 180mm - 300mm. So don't feel you've made a mistake with the purchase of a lens that doesn't work or you simply don't have a use for.

Interesting question.  I have a 70-200mm however don't use it so much these days.  The two lenses that I use the most are my 24-70mm and 85mm.  Especially love use the 85mm, actually that's my favorite lens for last couple years.

G'day Steve

Good Q mate :)

I feel that this comes down very much on the "what do I shoot and the locations I use" for my picture taking

I can well see PJ 'togs only / mostly using short lenses as the camera-to-subject distances are always pretty short
I can see studio 'togs only using short lenses as that will do the job inside a studio

However, many people who shoot wildlife / long-range landscapes / sport and so on will probably find that their images are too small when using lenses under 100mm, so for them, it's a different solution to their 'problem'

Hope this helps

Telephoto lens is a must have and far to valuable not to have IMHO.

Depends what you shoot. My 70-200 rarely comes off my main body, but I shoot mainly sports. I got a used 300mm last fall that I hope to use a lot more come baseball season. That one was too long for small basketball gyms.

The value of telephotos depends on the kind of images you make.  If you do street photography only, for instance, then you might likely not need one.  If you engage in sports photography, for instance, it would be critical.  If you have the focal lengths you need to do the photography you use, then all is well.
