Why do some variable ND filters have polarizers built in?

What's the purpose behind having a polarizer built into your variable ND filter?  Then you are forced to only use when you can use a polarized filter right?

Hey Mark,

both, the POL and the VND are neutral, meaning that they won't
have any effect on colours — they should not have.

While the POL and the CPOL (circular polariser) with cut out any
light coming in at a given incident degree — read reflections, the
VND will affect the whole spectrum of light coming from any/all
direction and so reduce the total amount of light entering the lens.

I had at times to use both together; the VND to reduce the inco-
ming light and the CPOL to cut out the reflections in the scene.

In a document on melting glaciers, where Sun, ice and snow were
over the top — ƒ22 @ 1/4000s — I used the VND to slow down the
SS and widen the aperture and the CPOL to cut the reflections out.

ADDENDUM

I made sure that both are mounted on a step up ring, just in case.
