How are they getting the sun and moon so huge?

3 years 6 months ago #698121 by Liem Stailey
A buddy is letting me use his 100-400mm lens this weekend.  I pick it up on Friday from him.  Now he said this focal size will capture the sun or moon huge in the photos.  But at what aperture and are these shots normally just one photo or two that are blended together in post?

These were single shots captured with a 600 ƒ4 / D850 combo.

OK good stuff, the second image.  What aperture did you use and where did you focus?  The power lines?

Awesome, where did you set you focus in the shot?

The focus point was calculated and reported on
the focus ring manually. Using a distance meter
and applying the hyperfocal distance approach.

After all that was figured out, where was that spot in the photo?

G'day Liem

DO not worry yourself about focus points - it will happen with you once you have a subject to shoot pics of !!!

=if= your camera eyepiece shows the sun as 'too bright to look at' then go to live-view mode and use the rear screen for composition

However, -if- you are using a camera with EVF, it will regulate the brightness of the sun within the viewfinder and you can use the viewfinder okay.  I have done hundreds of big-sun shots over the 15 yrs of using EVF cameras.

The big-sun comes about after you exceed 300mm ... so 500mm to 1000mm of lens will pull in these wacky-beaut sun images

Hope this helps

That last image is cool, I like how the trees create a frame for you.  I was just posting a question about compositions.  Very cool beans.

G'day Tom

The camera was focussed & metered on the sun itself, then with the shutter button held "half-down" the camera was moved sideways to get the composition I wanted, before fully pressing the shutter button to take the image.

Hope this helps
