Aperture priority but shutter speed changes

3 years 5 months ago #698505 by Sean English
Hi
I'm kind of new to photography and I'm trying to get the concepts of Aperature Priority, Shutter Speed, etc down.
So, I took several photos of my wife in the park with my Nikon D50 set on Aperture  at F11. It is my understanding that when on AP(aperture priority) I set the A, and camera choses the shutter speed. So, I set the A to F11 and take two photos one after another without changing anything. (Not on tripod so hand movement might be a variable). Camera set the shutter speed once at 1/100 and 1/8. Thus, rendering me different exposures. What is going on? This is confusing.

"A" mode will lock on a given aperture until you reach
a possible limit where it will adjust rather then letting
an underexposed picture go through.

Maybe, in the menu somewhere, you might have keyed
in improper configuration in terms of ISO or minimum
minimum shutter speed.

I would suggest you tweak one item at the time and see
what happens. For now, try to setting up Auto ISO and
Auto WB while you're at it. Take some shots and observe
what happens,

Have a good time!

Light is free… capturing it is not!

You must have something else enabled. If the images were in the same light, a proper working camera will not pick a shutter that drastically different.

Could it be the place which the camera was metering the light changed between the photos?

There is a third element to the exposure and that is the ISO.  If you changed it, you will change the shutter speed chosen by the meter.  If it is on auto you have to elements for the meter to adjust.  Set the ISO to a static number and go through the exposures as you did before.  You should get the same or similar shutter speeds for your f11 choice.
