Put both the subject and background in focus
I'm relatively new to photography, and I've learned about photography almost entirely from watching youtube videos.
In a lot of videos that I've seen, people talk about widening the aperture for subject isolation. I do appreciate that aspect of the photography as art, but I'm just an amateur photographer who is trying to take photos of my friends and family.
So I find myself more often wanting to put both the subject and the background in focus. I mean, if you visit an interesting place, wouldn't you want the photo to show where you are? Am I wrong to think this way?
Just the other day, I got this in front of NYC skyline. I wanted the background in focus, but at that time with less than perfect light and with limited time I had, I couldn't figure out how to do it.
I knew I needed a flash, but I had never used a pop-up flash before, so I didn't even know how to use that properly, either. So I just put the camera in auto mode and handed it to my wife and had her take this one.
I suppose it isn't a terrible photo, but how would I put both the background and the subject in focus?
If I had a tripod, I would imagine I could have set the aperture smaller, make the shutter speed slower (Or maybe I could just bump up the ISO?). But then, wouldn't the subject (me) become blur though?
How would you take photo like this but with the background in focus? If you had a tripod, how would you do it. And if you don't have a tripod, how would you do it?
