What Camera Should I Get? Advice Please

3 years 4 months ago #704679 by BeginnerVanessa
I am a geology student and avid hiker looking to get started in photography. I am interested in taking pictures of landscapes and geologic features that I see on my hikes. I am looking for a camera that is robust, preferably water-proof, and takes good quality photos. What sort of camera should I get?

My mom has a Canon PowerShot SX40 HS that she offered to lend me. If I take her up on this, what sort of advice do you have for me?

I'm more interested in photographs than just documentation. Rather than taking images of the land for the sake of analyzing the geology, I'm interested in understanding the geology for the sake of appreciating the land. I want to capture that appreciation and communicate it, if that makes sense. I don't really know much yet about how to do that via photographs, but it's a skill I want to learn.
