40D -> M200?

3 months 2 weeks ago #733848 by tambey64
Hi, I have a 10 year old Canon 40D. I want to move to mirrorless. I was thinking of a used M200. I have a good 1.4 prime lens I’d want to still use. My question is, this seems parallel in terms of functionality (fine), but I want to make sure I’m not LOSING functionality with this move. I generally shoot in aperture priority to get the most out of the 1.4. Thanks!

Why the M200? Why the move to mirrorless if it is not really an upgrade? The only advantage is eye AF which I think is important. But what typed of pictures do you take?

Major things you lose. The M200 uses a different mount. M mount vs EF/EFS which has many more lenses available. You can use an adapter, extra weight, length. Could have problems with 3rd party lenses so this is an unknown. ( the RF adapter definitely has issues with older 3rd party)

Second, you lose a viewfinder, which is a pretty big deal to me. In bright sunlight you cannot see the display, or in the dark, everyone else sees your display. You can buy a hoodman loupe if they are comparable, this is the only way to put this camera up to your eye (you many not care about this) But even so, the DSLR is instant, the display screens are sluggish, shooting sports or fast moving objects will be more difficult with the M200.

This one is a major issue is you use F 1.4 lenses. the M200 has a 1 stop shutter speed disadvantage 1/8000svs 1/4000s  With your 40d if you shoot outside you may be scraping up to the 1/8000 shutter speed and your image will be over exposed at f 1.4 during mid day. The only way to fix this is with a ND filter or a Circular polarizing filter which would cut your shutter speed back down to what you had with the 40d.

The M200 has  1/3 less shots on a battery (because the read display is always on) you only get 315 shots vs 800 on the 40d

You cannot connect a flash to the M200 because it has no flash shoe. It only has a cheap little pop up flash. I would not choose the M200 camera based on this fact alone. Though both have built in flash, the 40 has 7 meters more distance  (reach) which is sizable.

The 40d has weather sealing, the M200 does not so don't take it out in the rain.

You cannot do HDR on the M200 because it does not have exposure bracketing (or I should say you cannot do HDR easily or quickly because you must manually change the exposure settings after each shot.

I suggest you read this.
