When did you upgrade your camera gear when starting out?

I have a 7 year old Sony A7r.  The camera works, but I was wondering when you were new, and if you happen to start out on a used camera, how did you determine it was time to upgrade?

*Putting aside budget sort of answers.

Thanks!

I didn't upgrade when starting out - I upgraded a few years later after identifying the shortcomings of my present gear.

i upgraded whenever i found my gear lacking.  lenses are more important than the camera body, so i'd get whatever lenses you need before upgrading the body.

WOW, good question.  It was price and 'thinking' I was ready.  In all reality,  I didn't need the new camera.

Oh man, it was when my first camera died and it was going to cost more to fix than I found worth considering the age of it.  So I jumped on a new camera.

I started back in 2007 using my cell phone camera. At some I decided to buy a 'proper' camera, my Canon 600D. Used that for a few years and only recently upgraded to my 90D. Looking back, every time I upgraded it was because I had squeezed all I could out of the kit I had at the moment. Same goes for the lenses.
