My sky’s are washed out??

Hello, so when I take photos of outdoors and when there are blue skies and white clouds, my skies always seem to get washed out.  Why is that?

You're overexposing the sky. Practical digital photographers will employ HDR to (usually successfully) deal with it, while happy analog luddites like me resort to graduated neutral density filters when conditions permit.

With an OFV found in SLR and DSLR cameras, you don't get the live preview. If your metering is set so that the ground is properly exposed, the sky will likely be over exposed. What you can do is check the photo after it's taken and get an idea of the exposure and compensate by reducing the exposure.

So the ground will be darker, but the sky won't wash out. The ground is easier to bring back in post. You can restore an underexposed image, but you often cannot restore an over exposed image. To be safe, error of the side of under exposing in those situations.

When it comes to taking photos outdoors, I always underexpose my shots by a stop

I had this problem shooting bracketed shots for exterior’s of houses. It wasn’t till I discovered “aperture” mode or “A” priority mode on my camera. It lets the camera dictate the aperture, and you can handle the rest. Try it out and see if it dramatically helps your images.
