Histogram?

Okay I heard this term "histogram" today. I just grinned and nodded stepped back and listened. I am learing so many diff meanings. Can someone explain what it is?

Here's a little tutorial on them... All digital cameras (DSLR's that is) have them , older models have just one reading, newer cameras show different ones for the 3 colors (Red/Blue/Green aka RBG). They show you when you are over/under or properly exposed

2 cents.....

the histogram is a horizontal representation of the tonal range of the image.
If I photograph a white glove on a white rock, the histogram will be weighted to the right since all of the tones are light.

If I photograph an 18% gray card and that is all that is the viewfinder, my histogram will have one spike. It should be in the middle if exposure is correct. There is only one spike because there is only one tone.
If I photograph a white, Black and a gray square, my histogram will have three spikes. One in the middle for gray, on the right for white, and one on the left for black.

The main idea is to keep exposure so that the right side does not touch the wall unless you have specular highlights as reflections of the sun in chrome..
