Getting Started with my first Digital SLR - Nikon D300

13 years 7 months ago #98 by Travel Nut
Hi everyone,

I picked up my first Digital SLR camera earlier this year. Nikon D300. Technically the wife picked this up for me for a birthday gift.

I had a Canon point and shoot camera for years and I found this very simple to use. This Nikon D300 is a beast of a camera to learn! So much more to this than my little Canon.

How did you get started with a Digital SLR from a point and shoot? Online classes? Books?

Thanks!

I have the same camera! I love this thing and this was also my first DSLR too! I bought a few books off of Amazon.com. If you go there and type in Nikon D300 books you will find all sorts of books for you to pick from.

Personally I've not taken any classes yet, but am thinking about it next year when I have a little more time.

Great to meet you and thanks for the tips. I have found a few books I've just ordered from there.

I use a D300 as well - it's a top end camera - lots of features.

First of all don't get too intimidated - learn new features slowly and practice with them.

One thing that helped me is a training video I bought from Elite Video. Here's the link:

Let me state that I have no interest in Elite Video. I bought this video (2 DVD's) when I first bought my D300 a couple of years ago. Starts off with a walk around and then they show you how to put the strap on. By the end of the 2nd DVD they are really deep into the weeds with the super technical stuff. I still put this video on about every three months as a refresher - and I always either learn something new or remember something I've forgotten.

There's also an excellent book by Darrell Young called "mastering the Nikon D300". I was turned onto this over at Nikonians.
