My first ever b&w photo

12 years 7 months ago #130708 by John37

I really didn't intend for it to be in black and white. But when I applied the effect I liked it. In fact, as soon as the effect was applied I stopped and saved it as is. It's not much too look at but I like it. Whatdya think?
Thanks for looking!

The tones are good, but I'm not sure if the comp works for me. It's new and interesting.

I think as far as the comp goes It would have been better if the fence post would have been down in the frame more. Can you reshoot?

Thanks for the input. I can certainly appreciate the 'comp" comment. I didn't pay very much attention to that part of it while I was taking the shot. I was moreso going for the DOF practice. It is a scene that I can reshoot without too much trouble
I'll try the suggestions and see where that takes me. Thanks again!

While not a hard rule, we typically focus on the "subject" in a photograph. Was your subject the windmill, or the rail?

Neither, really. I wanted to make the windmill fuzzy in the background, while having the board in focus... just playing with f/stops. I'll sometimes go out and shoot without too much regard for the subject (I know that didn't sound right). For example, I might go out and photograph vehicles but only concentrating on part of the vehicle instead of the vehicle itself. I'm not good enough to compose yet. As of now I'm only able to take high rez images of things, which is not the same as taking a good photo, if you catch my drift. :)

That was more of a rhetorical question to get you to think about what your subject is in every photo you make. In the end, it is your choice of subject that matters most.

Matthew :)
