First of all what a great looking dog !!

Pic 1 is great, I wouldn't crop quite so tight, but that is just me

Pic 2 I find the subject gets lost in the surroundings.

You caught the eyes right ok !!!

You will not be judged as a photographer by the pictures you take, but by the pictures you show.

I am not sure what you mean by " lost in surroundings" for the second photo.....thanks for the critique!!

For me I find with the 2nd pic, the focus is on the front eye and paw, the rest of the dog blends with the back ground, its not a big deal.... :beerbang:

I agree, the photo of the dog's face itself is really nice. The ears I think are cropped off too much, or maybe at an odd place.

I see what Darrell means about 'lost' - the background seems to have some distractions. In the second one it's noticeable that there are light and dark shapes to the left of the dog but you can't tell what they are (maybe the paw? a pillow?) - I think the viewer's eyes see that something's there and might be drawn to the contrast of dark and bright shapes.

Try holding something over the left side of the photo, maybe a piece of gray/neutral color paper or cardboard, and notice how much more that makes the dog's face stand out.

ok thanks guys! I think I see what you are talking about....I am a beginner and have the 50mm canon lens....I need to learn the best apeture to shoot and always was under the impression that the wider the better...so I take most of my pics at 1.8....I think that is my problem..I need to tighten it up a bit to bring more of my subject into focus...thanks for that advise!!
