Need some tips.

Hello, I am about to participate in a "black and white photography" contest at www.voubs.com  and I would like to come up with something like this at the end.

Any usefull tips? I am already reading articles about black and white photography techniques like this one petapixel.com/2014/11/24/6-black-white-p...ochrome-enthusiasts/ and photographylife.com/how-to-take-black-and-white-pictures  , but I would appreciate if someone point me the most important things. I have a Nkon D2100. What lenses should I use and what about the filters?

B&W is an area unto itself, but shares common elements with color. You need to learn about light and shadows, post-processing, and (I'm old-school here) zones. It is unlikely you can decide you want to create brilliant B&W images and be immediately successful. With work you can get there.

I think you mean "Nikon D3100"?

You'll want to study Ansel Adams. Street photography (Cartier-Bresson, Meyer, any of a bunch). Avedon. Mapplethorpe (flowers). There's lots out there. You must master the tones, light, geometry/composition, contrast, detail. I like to listen to Candid Frame, whose podcaster is an excellent interviewer, and there are many episodes with brilliant people that discuss what it means to take photographs.

In other words, it takes work. And IMO they're all important things. Everything matters.

You have a reasonable camera, but I recommend a long lens if you want to do portraits. and 85mm f/1.8 would be fine. Note that the D3100 doesn't support microadjustments. You don't need any filters.

Here's my favorite selfie, taken with a D5100 and 105mm f/2.8 lens. Note the use of shadows, highlights, detail, contrast.

I 'm also a fan of black and white photography. When it comes to filters and effects, there are various photos apps and image editors that can make your pictures looks in one step. Right, now, I'm currently using a PhotoViewerPro with amazing editing tools.
