The answer (typically) is, "it depends."

The histogram is identical for both images, and therein lies a problem. If you want to create a B&W image, you need to PP for a B&W image. Simply desaturating isn't adequate.

That said, both are rather dark, lacking tonal variety, and the shadows along his right jaw pretty much destroy any definition of that side of his head. Thus the problem with single light portraits. But that's really a nit, I think.

Not a fan of the focal length. A 50 I'm guessing?

Angle is good, as is DoF, and clearly something is on his mind. That makes it an interesting image.

But back to your question: you need to work on creating black and white images before you worry about trying to decide which is better. It's an apples-to-oranges comparison in the first place, and per the above, you haven't help your decision-making process yet.

All, IMO, of course.

I'm with a previous poster (GRH), the B&W could be a lot better with some post work....

Why so serious?

B&W or colours… it's all pictorial communications at the end of the day.
The way I see it, if colours do not contribute positively to the visual pleasure, dump'm.

Here though, if you shot this take RAW, I would suggest you revisit the rendition as I don't see it as optimise in terms of DR and WB… and if it is not in colours, it won't be in B&W.

Light is free… capturing it is not!
