What would it help, Mike, when tonal range would
be reduced to increase the dramatic factor?

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Is that a photoshop process ?  I have only the old Elements 6.0 version, but you have got me on a search and experiment mission now.  Generally, I will use quick fix if I want to adjust something like lighting, color or sharpen.

I am unfamiliar with "tonal range" controls, but I am reading reading reading :)

playing with settings gave me these variations.  It's fun to experiment, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

I don't use photoshop, Mike! My suggestion was to perform the
said tonal range tweak in your RAW converter as I did in this bold
attempt (I did not ask for your permission) to illustrate:

Oh, you mean a setting ON my camera. Well, when I get a camera (other than the one on my workphone that I use 99 % of the time ) I hope to be able to select RAW and also am wanting a FULL FRAME exposure capabilities.

An using my picture ! I'm glad you did. I learned something about what is possible in this world. I like yours. The darks are pretty-mostly dark and yet you can still see the concrete patterns. Didn't you like the leaves ? Again though, yours is cleaner. The eye can go right to the shadow. I think though the leaves tell part of the story. Like what time of year it might be and that "life" is near this place, because there are trees here. Perhaps the shadow of a tree is enough.

No oil spots in the street either.

No Mike, on camera just be sure to protect the whites. The
tonal taming is done in the converter.

This was a suggestion that did not consider your artistic intent
nor the story telling. Sorry.

Haha !!  No worries at all my friend !!  The only artistic intent I had when I shot it was the framing of the shadow and the way the light hit on the tips of each step.  I recognized it was an interesting scene, but that's about the limit of my vision.  What you did with the picture is really great.  I hope to learn how to do that.

That story telling stuff was just me trying to sound like an artsy  photographer :)

So, what, or where is "the RAW converter" ??  Do I have one already and am just not aware of it ?
