The water looks that way as it was a 10 second exposure and the dark are is from the tree's shadow

It's a long exposure, folks.

This is the challenge of water: how long? Do you want to retain some texture, some shape, or just smooth it out completely?

For me, 10 seconds is not an optimal length, precisely for the reason of the comments above. I think you want 1/4 - 2/3 second to retain texture, or 30 s - 2 m or more to completely remove any variations.

At the very least I would encourage anyone working a scene to try a number of different exposures and spend time in post evaluating the merits and shortcomings of each. There's no other way to learn.

IMO, of course.

Compositionally, the tree here is awkward, and doesn't really lend anything to the scene. I'd rather have the rocks and something in the distance. Again, IMO.

I do like the toning, contrast and detail.
