Interesting but the tonal range needs to be enhanced.

Hmmmm.  Thx Kira.  I knew something was incomplete with it, but couldn't find any more fixes in my pp equipment.
I'm working with 8.

Lighten shadows
Darken highlights
Midtone contrast
Saturation
Hue
Temperature
Tint
and
Sharpen.

These are all sliders.
The correct ( or at least better ) results combination must be in there somewhere.

I think the midtone contrast needs to be more defined and lighten the highlights a bit.

Reduce the clarity and the highlights. Add more contrast and sharpness.

Suggesting the "tonal range can be enhanced" is pretty meaningless when it's clear the image data runs from fully black to fully white. And the histogram shows that there's quite a bit of contrast in the overall image.

What is missing, for me, is detail in the sky (it may not be blown out, but it's bland), and I think less contrast is called for. Perhaps more detail in the bark?

There may not be much you can do, given the light. The image is a bit stark, and while I think you're trying to impart a mood, I'm not really getting it.

But that's just me. What do I know?
