What makes L glass different from other Canon lenses?

For starters, they are all full frame.  There are not, and never have been, any L labeled EF-S lenses.  Otherwise, everything gets upgraded (not just the glass).

The price!

Seriously, though...

Some L's are worth it, but I think a few of them are inferior to their 3rd party copies...

While I'm not sure about being worth the very high margin over non 'L' lenses, my 100-400L has been with me through 2 and about to be 3 bodies...it slips a bit and has a bit of dust in it now, but it's been a fantastic motorsport lens and probably worth the initial price (about twice that of the Canon body and other lenses I have)...

Just echoing what others have said...the L lenses are Canon's top of the line optics, so they have better glass, wider apertures, more rugged construction, and produce sharper images toward the edges. They tend to focus faster too.

Higher optics, weather resistant(need a filter on the front to complete the seal).

While this is technically true, the EF-S 15-85 f3.5-5.6 IS USM comes close to 'L spec" with three aspherical elements and one UD glass element.
