Night sky photos with a Canon T4i

8 years 6 months ago #457868 by Ray Tevich
I'm not sure where I should be posting this question.  What CanonT4i Rebel lens is pretty good for taking moon photos and other night time sky photos?  I'm new to photography and have just a 50mm lens for the camera.  I was on the phone with people with B&H and they told me to sign up here for good advice.

Is there a telephoto lens that you would recommend? Thank you

Ray

Well, B&H seems to offer good advice.

You've asked two different questions in your two posts. I'll address this one.

For the moon, a longer focal length is required in order to zoom in to the moon. 400 - 800 mm would not be too much. On the plus side, the moon is quite bright, so you don't need particularly fast glass.

You can look at my recent Supermoon thread in the Landscape forum for settings I've used.

As for sky photos (stars?) the 50 is a good starting point, but sensor size and quality are relevant. There are lots of tutorials on astrophotography; google for them. You'll be best off by doing some legwork on the web and collecting as much input as possible, rather than just asking here.

For astrophotography I favor a lions in the 17-24 mm range and prefer a prime over a zoom. As stated before, there are a number of considerations not least of which is the length of the exposure time before trails begin. The longer the focal length, the shorter the exposure time unless, of course, you are trying to shoot star trails.

I just want to say thank you all, I've been away traveling and back.  So happy to see so much help.  Yes my questions are a bit redundant perhaps.  I'm new here and wasn't sure where to post and the questions seemed somewhat different to me (the beginner). So much gems to pull from here.

Thanks again!

Not to hijack this thread but I was wondering opinions on full frame vs cropped in regards to night time photography, I'm looking to get a good body around black friday and any help / advice would be appreciated.

My approach would be to pick the lens first.  Then get the body with the largest sensor that goes with that particular lens.
