Canon 7D MkII - GPS

2 years 9 months ago #549823 by Studia
I have the Canon 7D MkII with the builtin GPS function. The settings are to update the position every 5 secs.

When viewing my images on the map (I use geosetter) I quite regularly find that the placement can be either reasonably accurate or wildly inaccurate sometime placing the images quite some distance from its location. I have had instances of two images taken within seconds of each other being placed hundreds of metres (or more) apart on the map.

My question is, has any other user experienced this problem and is there any remedy or action to improve the GPS accuracy.

Thanks,

It sounds like maybe there is a gps signal issue, if there is a partially obstructed view of the sky to the receiver, this can drastically reduce the accuracy.

GPS uses 3D trilateration to determine the location, ideally you would want to have a lock on 4 satellites.

1 satellite = anywhere on the surface of a sphere
2 satellites = anywhere on a circle
3 satellites = two possible locations
4 satellites = elimination of the second possible location

GPS is an interesting technology, it definitely not infallible. A little digging around, it seems like a firmware update may help with the issue, I'm not sure if you can find the location info in the setting, some GPS systems show the connection status to you ( for example my car ) will show the number of satellites that the device is currently connected to.

Anyways hopefully this info will help some, if not maybe someone with more expierence can chime in and give their opinion.
