What macro lens for Canon 5D Mark III?

5 years 1 month ago #634018 by Jerrid
I'd like to pick up a good macro lens for my 5D Mk III.  The truth is that I don't have much experience with macro photography and would like to start exploring this and kind of see where things go from there.  I've read people reverse mounting lenses, to focal lengths from 60mm to 180mm.  To using bellows and other tools.  I just want one lens to start off with.

What do you think about the 100mm f/2.8 or Tamron 90mm f/2.8?

I think people that reverse lenses do so out of either necessity, or a compelling need to muck with equipment.

For those that want to actually shoot, buy a lens.

The Tamron is a fine choice, as is the Canon. I'd look for a used copy of the Tamron to work with. If you ultimately decide that macro is your thing, get the 180mm. If not, you've not laid out a bunch of money.

I just moved from the 5D Mark III to the EOS R.  I used the 100mm for macro stuff, which is a incredible lens.

Any "true" macro lens will give you good results, optically,  as long as your technique is good. The differences lie mainly in features, & build quality. Lenses in the 90-100mm focal length range are the most convenient. Don't be fooled by lens reviews touting MTF results as those results are done under bench testing, which is way different than real-world shooting. If you are only capable of 40 lines per millimeter, a lens offering better resolution than that will not give you better results. I currently have 9 different true macro lenses from 55 to 180mm in length. Some are manual focus, others are autofocus. None have stabilization. My go-to macro lens is an older manual focus 105mm F2.8 from my film days. Lots of people tout AF & IS (in Canon-speak) as being useful. They can be until you get up to about 1/2 life size, then their usefulness drops. Yes, there are people who use their macro lenses for other situations, but I have a plethora of other lenses better suited to those other situations and, for the most part, only use my macro lenses for macro shooting...

Oh man, you really need to consider the 180mm Tamron.  Amazing lens for the $$.  A buddy of mine has it, and I've used it a few times.

here let me help you:

100mm is a slick lens, you'll find many using that and the 60mm.  That 180mm is a beast for macro.  You got the $$, go for it.

Just toss on a 100mm and be done with it.   Well that is what a good friend of mine would tell you.  He's been shooting with Canon's since film days.
