Canon EOS R taking 2 photos at once verse single shot

Posting such a silly question is a last resort for me.  I'm not a beginner photographer, however can't figure this out.  I've owned a number of Canon cameras for years and just can't see why this camera is taking 2 photos when it should be taking just one.  

There must be something goofy that I'm looking past.  Big thanks if you can help me out here.

Hey Paul, is CL or CH selected instead of S and
your triggering is a tad slow?
Light is free… capturing it is not!

Something to consider, if you have the camera set up to take both RAW + JPG, you could be seeing both the RAW clip and the JPG at the same time.

Have you confirmed that are are in Single Drive and NOT in Continuous Drive shooting mode?

In any type of photography, shooting people or wildlife, two
shots are never a bad thing because of eye movements, Sure,
if you can't control the number of shots, must be annoying.
Light is free… capturing it is not!

Any chance are you using a cable release that might have gotten wet?  A number of years ago, I was using my D800 with a wired cable release that had gotten wet.  It seemed to work, but every few shots I would see the shutter getting tripped a couple times for a single press.  I ended up replacing the trigger and never had that problem again.
