New Camera Canon 60D Mark II - Sky is constantly blown out.

4 years 10 months ago #648275 by Josh-Mccabe
Hey guys, I just purchased a canon 60D mark II with a 24-70mm 2.8 lens.

I will post some examples below.

I had a rebel t6i with sigma 18-38 1.8 lens before this and had zero problems with losing the sky with my photography. I would take it to the ligthroom drop highlights, and the sky would return.

I shoot on manual, no flash. I have played with all metering modes on my camera. I have switched to raw but have had same issue.

My subject is either next to black, or my sky is white and gone past recovery.

ISO 500 F4.5 Shutter1/160 the sky is gone, and if i bring my subjects back, they are full of noise.

I think two things:

1) you have a camera with a wider dynamic range, that will do a better job of capturing what was there. I think the t6 probably compressed the highs and lows and gave you something that wasn't as spread out.
2) I think you've got the worst situation possible here, with the sky somewhat bright and no light on your subject (it being sunrise/sunset). This is where people learn to use fill flash, because you are expecting too much.

You have a wide DR here. Something has to give.

Doesn't matter what camera you use in that scene. The result will be near the same. You need to add fill light on the subject to balance the scene. You're expecting way too much out of the camera. The high end models from Sony and Nikon will do a little better but not enough in this situation.

Most importantly, the highlights are preserved here.
Now see if you could recover the low keys if shot in RAW.

The use of a back curtain TTL flash is a good idea.

Light is free… capturing it is not!
