Would the Sigma Contemporary be comparable to the Canon L series lens in terms of quality, sharpness and so forth?

Depends on the lens.  In general the L series will be a better chunk of glass.  Not to take anything away from Sigma, many of the Sigma lenses get very high reviews.  The plus side with the Sigma over the Canon L series lenses, is that you will save some $$.

L glass baby!  Seriously always stick with the OEM glass.

Some of the art series lenses from sigma are better than their L counterpart for IQ.  L series weatherproofing is another thing though.
