VIDEO question on tweaking Canon 80D audio

4 years 7 months ago #659399 by dsfinnegan
Hello,
I record concert band concerts with the 80D with a Tascam recorder attached on a hotshoe. I want to ensure the Tascam records better audio than the 80D, but the 80D does have pretty good audio. Therefore, I am interested in tweaking the audio settings on the 80D to ensure the audio from the recorder is more of the “reference quality” and is far better than the 80D’s audio. If anyone has any setting or tweaking tips that would be appreciated. Thanks!
Dan

PS, and just to clarify, I am not asking on how to get the best audio out of the 80D. I am looking for a way to be able to make sure the audio from the recorder is the "reference" or "realistic" recording and have the 80D audio far from that.

Is it even possible to make adjustments to the audio quality on the camera? I don't think so.

You can adjust the recording level, and engage some noise reduction for wind, and that's about it.

I checked on Magic Lantern, thinking it might allow something, but there is no port of ML to the 80D.

So, basically, there ain't no tweakin'.

The only real audio settings on the 80D are as follows:

Auto Level: On/Off
If auto level is off, manual level option is available ranging from 1 (low) to 10 (high)
Wind Filter: on/off
Attenuator: on/off (this functions like a limiter, which prevents the audio from distortion)

That's really about it, but like I said, my go-to is auto level and wind filter on, or maybe just having the recording level high. Like I said, I'm looking for BELOW AVERAGE audio so that the separate audio from the recorder is the superior and reference quality resource.

I'm unaware of any camera mic that is decent. They suffer from a limited dynamic range, at the very least. Be definition, the quality is not ideal.
