Canon 5D Mark III vs 5D Mark IV

4 years 3 months ago #671044 by CadillacRanch66
Would you recommend purchasing a 5D Mark III (shutter count = 1,500 for $1,000 with a battery grip or 5D Mark IV (shutter count = 200,000 for $1,300)?  The Mark III is in like new/mint condition, and the Mark IV is in very good condition.  I've heard that a new shutter for the Mark IV is approx. $400-$500 for Canon to replace.  I shoot 70/30 photo to video, but both are usually in low light conditions (night and indoor sporting events).  I've heard of Mark III's who are on their third replaced shutter...

The M4 is a better low light shooter with a couple other modern features. It depends on what you'll be shooting, but the 200K shutter snaps would have me concerned. The M3 is still a lot of camera.....I've not heard of shutter issues with either.
No help here.

Thanks for your reply, effron, I am really drawn to the Mark IV, but the 200k shutter count has me nervous (even with an excellent price, and a new shutter, 200k is still a lot of mileage on a DSLR). The owner of the Mark IV is a professional, and seems will also throw in a 24-105 f4 L for an additional $100. I might be able to get the body/lens for $1,300... Decisions, decisions...

The suggested lifespan of a 5D mk IV shutter is 130,000 - 150,000 actuations, from what I can find.

Which means that one may be due for a replacement.

That said, it could go over 350,000. Who knows? But A wise person would include the repair cost as a given, not as a "maybe".

According to eBay, those go, used, for >$1600. So even with the repair, you're coming out ahead. And the IV is an arguably better body.

I'd suggest taking the lens with it.

Thank you for your response, garyrhook, that's exactly what I was thinking. If I can make this deal happen for $1,300 for both the body and lens, I'm going to take it! Too good to pass up...

Apologies; I was not careful with my $ numbers.

He's asking too much for the mk IV with that shutter count, and a guaranteed repair that will be at least $300. You should have anecdotal information (eBay, KEH) that shows his asking price for the body is on the high side, especially considering how much it's been used. That said, $1300 for body+lens might be acceptable. Physical condition, for me, tells a lot about how things have been treated.

You will, of course, ensure the camera is working properly?

Just remember the old saw, "If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is".....I'd go slow and careful with that M4.....
