can i save by date

I recently treated myself to a proper set up partly because I have lost a lot of pals over the last year and you never know when its your time !

My question is about my canon 90d body , I took some photos on 2 separate days and when I came to download them to my computer I discovered both days photos were merged into 1 main folder.
Is it possible to make the camera save in separate folders by date. If not possible I will have to download to my laptop every day and rename the canon100 default name to a date. I would have to do this because I will be photographing dolphins in Scotland and don't want 100's of photos in 1 folder.

I  have a 50mm f 1.8 that has a shallow depth of field  , although I am a noobie I realised after purchase that although it is good , the 1.4 version is more flexible so I got that as well ,  I also have  a 100 to 400 mm mk2 for dolphins , all canon lens.

You would have to create a folder for each day of shooting (or for individual scenarios) in camera. I think you can find the folder option in the wrench menu.

Your idea is similar to many other users ~but~ can I ask you to reconsider the date format saving regime

How will you remember exactly what you have taken on a specific date? in order to find that image in a year's time?

The date, time and file number etc are already baked in to the file and I believe is the default name of each file unless changed when downloading? Creating folders in camera for individual days/shoots and appending the name/place etc to that information when downloading those folders to the computer, or after downloading via file info in Bridge or Lightroom would give the option Keith is looking for.

There's not enough information here.

What operating system are you using, how are you transferring photos, and what (if any) software will you be using to processing and manage your images?

If you were using Lightroom, it will sort your imported images by date for you, yes.  Or you can tell it to dump everything in one spot.

But without a better question, the answers will only be so good.

To add to Gary's response - and to bring in some usage observations~

Over the years I have had too many students who have used the "auto-upload" function to upload camera images to the computer. These all go into a folder carrying the date that the images are uploaded, thus annually creating dozens of folders carrying a date for its name

The problems then start when the user starts to seek a specific image .... 'where are the pics from Suzy's wedding?' ' ~ gosh- when did I upload them?'

To me it makes more sense to establish a series of content folders - where the names make sense to the user - and upload images into a designated folder, or a sub-folder inside the main folder. eg: 'family' could contain 'dad' + 'mum + 'child-1' + 'child-2' etc.

Keith, reading between the lines, it sounds like you will love having your images cataloged properly.

I suggest learning Lightroom. When you import images, you can give them keywords like "dolphins" or "Scotland". Then later on, you can filter to view all your "dolphins" photos, or all the "dolphins" photos taken on a particular date.

You can even filter to view only photos taken on your 90D. Or only photos taken using the 50mm 1.4 lens. Or only photos taken using an aperture of f8.

Lightroom is really powerful. You'll love it.
