monochrome update

As you know I am a high tech camera newbie and I treated myself to loads of canon gear. I managed to get a few photos at a local park just hours before lockdown so since then I have been playing around with the camera and different lens around my garden.

I did not want to keep swapping between manual and auto just so I could do monochrome. Canon UK said you cant do auto/monochrome so suggested I use colour and then monochrome it in their software program. I tried it but some of the darker shades did not look natural dark.

That was about 3 weeks ago , today out of the blue Canon Europe told me to refer to page 82/83 of the manual , it describes how to use something called creative assist and YES you can do monochrome in auto. I had seen the creative assist icon but never opened it as I did not want to mess things up. It would not have mattered anyway because once you have set this to do something their is a reset button.

BTW I have a canon 90d body

Personally, I would not shoot monochrome. The discarded
colours are bringing so much more control in PP over DR
and tonal tweaks when they're all there… each his own! :P

Light is free… capturing it is not!

If you shoot jpg, I would not shoot monochrome. I would suggest you shoot in RAW and set the camera to monochrome. This lets you visualize what the image will look like in black and white but the RAW file will contain all the information for color. If you use dedicated software, the image will appear as black and white. If you use a different editor such as Lightroom or Photoshop, the image will come in as color. The best of both worlds is to shoot RAW+JPG. You will have all the color information available in the RAW file and a monochrome jpg to begin with.
