Canon 500D Autofocus - Tech Help Needed!

3 years 10 months ago #687288 by TobyLeights
Hiya, got a bit of a strange one. I've been trying to diagnose what is going on but I'm struggling!

So my autofocus seems to be incorrectly operating and fully extending and retracting the focus ring constantly.

I have a Canon 500D that is probably about 8 years old, recently I haven't been able to get the auto focus to work properly in a few different scenarios.

Lens 1 - 18 - 55mm Kit lens.
So this lens will autfocus absolutely fine but only when I am allowing the camera to use automatic focus point selection. If I try and switch over to any of the manual auto focus points it will just constantly fully extend and retract the focus ring and never actually focus on the subject.

Lens 2 - 50mm 1.8 II -
This one is a little different, on both the manual and auto focus point selection it will just constantly extend and retract, it will never focus correctly at all when using auto focus.

I'm really puzzled with this one, is there something wrong with the camera itself, I think it's very possible that my 50mm lens has broken but I'm concerned about the camera overall aswell as the manual auto focus point selection just will not work at all.

Anyone had any experience with this and know of any way to fix this?

Thank you!

Have you tried cleaning the contacts on both the camera body and lenses
