Does anyone have suggestions on good ecommerce software for building a website? I would like to start offering prints/packages on a site.

Many photographers are not building their own websites anymore. There are so many sites out there that make it easy for you to upload your photos and click a couple buttons and you have a site. Zenfolio, smugmug, photobiz etc..

Thank you for suggesting those websites, but I think I would like to try and build my own site.

Check out adobe dreamweaver. It's software to design a site, however I am not sure what's involve in the software to create the e commerce side. You may have to look into paypal for that, inserting a shopping cart.

Thank you, do you know if paypal's shopping cart is free?

To get and use the html code for the shopping cart is free. You have to pay a fee when you make a sale.

An approach that I used for a couple of sites using Wordpress was to buy the WPeStore plugin. I think it was about $50, but it is really easy to use and very flexible. I use it as the shopping cart for my ebook about stock photography, and it automatically fulfills the purchase with a digital file (which would also work for photos), and for my wife's jewelry site we have a different price for each piece of jewelry and anyone who buys a piece from the website generates an email back to me for fulfillment of the purchase.

I'm sure there is a lot more that the plugin does, but it certainly works well for me. The author is very good at support as well - I had an issue at the beginning and he worked on it immediately and helped me out.

Steve

PS - here is the jewelry site example . The little product description with price and the shopping cart in the right hand column as part of the plugin.
