Using something like Synology DS218 to back up client photos?

5 years 9 months ago #591559 by Jessy Page
My hard drives are full again and cloud is just a PITA.  Are any of you using any local NAS set ups to store photos?

How easy or difficult are these to get set up?

Let me know please.  Thanks!

Jessy

Having a local backup is always a good idea, and if you're going to set up a NAS, plan on RAID 1 (mirrored).

I have two Zyxel devices, and some mirrored drives managed in Windows. Easy enough to set up; most are browser managed, and you can create a share that is accessible by your Windows system. Then you only need drag and drop folders to make copies.

Note: never, ever, try to make a copy of your Lightroom catalog while LR is running. Just don't.

You don't indicate how much storage you are using, but I'd recommend a pair of drives in the 4TB - 6TB range. That seems to be a sweet spot for pricing right now. You can always add another NAS later.

You'll want a gigabit home network, too. Not wireless. The network speed is what matters, not the drive speed.

I don't think they're difficult to set up, but you need to understand your workflow and how you plan to make copies of things.

How does this compare to Drobo?

Highly recommend it.  I have a 5 bay Drobo 5N2.   Most of these have apps that do all the heavy lifting for you and are easy to set up.  I came close to pulling trigger on Synology a couple years ago, however had easier time getting ahold of Drobo rep to answer my questions.

Wasn't me :)

Do you happen to know if you can access files on your home office NAS while on the road?

Thanks again!!

You need to distinguish between a file server and a backup device. They're not going to be the same thing, necessarily.

If you need to access files while on the road, you either:
a) open up your home network to outside access, or
b) carry your files with you on an external drive.

I would never open my network up to outside access. Ever. Too much risk for me, and I think that if you want to do that, you need to be very educated on security. The very few people that I know that do it are pretty smart about that.

I'm left with the impression that you think you need all of your files with you all the time. Have you considered using an external drive, and splitting your LR catalog across devices? LR doesn't care, and supports that idea very well. You can keep what you need local to your laptop, and not so important stuff on an external device that may get left at home.

So, I'll ask the question I should have started with: what problem are you trying to solve?

Hey Gary, have you considered that these have crazy security built into them.  Which means you can access from the road and have peace of mind.  My brother just got one of these (might be G Tech) and I had same concerns as you.  He went on with huge pitch on the levels of security these have.  It's pretty impressive.  I'm sold.  Now I just need to figure which path I'm going to go down.

It's not the device itself, it's getting into your home network past a firewall in your router. (If you think routers are secure, I'm not sure you're paying attention.) And once through, exploiting flaws in your computers or other devices to plant malware or viruses.

The NAS is no the only thing you need to worry about. I prefer to keep everyone out of my home network, period.

So, back to my question: what problem is Jessy trying to solve? I'm hearing two different things now.

OP - as per Gary, can you clarify on what you are looking to specifically get solved?

Wasn't me :)

I'd be curious if you can increase the RAM from
  • 2GB of 1866 MHz DDR3L RAM
To anything higher?

Um, unlikely. Why do you think you might need to do so?
