1st Camera Recommendation for Sports, Vacations, & General Family Life

5 years 1 week ago #640421 by Sloane
In addition to general family life photos, we are heading to Yellowstone this summer and I'd prefer to have more than my cell phone to capture our memories.  Also, as my boys (11 & 8) get more inovolved in sports, I'd like to have good images of them competing in gyms and outside.

As a true beginner on a budget <$1000 what do you recommend for camera equipment?  Is there a good starter camera that I can add on to over time?  I would anticipate using this camera for 3+ years before I would want more capabilities.

Thanks!

I would suggest looking at a mirrorless micro-4/3s system, Panasonic has some very nice product, and with interchangeable lenses you can grow over time.

I have a GH7 with the 14-140 lens, primarily for video, but a decent little kit. And the micro-4/3 system means you can get lenses from any manufacturer.

Also, you could rent a lens or two for your vacation, after selecting a body+lens, and have some options, but as a beginning perhaps a general all-around zoom would be the place to start.

Your best bet is to be able to go to a store and check out your options. I know that's not possible in many places. But you do want to ensure that any camera you buy makes sense and feels good in the hand.

Hope this helps.

That will be a fun trip. You can consider the Sony a6300 with a 18-200mm lens should do the trick.  Buy used to save a few bucks too.

Example doing a quick Google search, here's one for $329 -- https://www.mpb.com/en-us/used-equipment/used-photo-and-video/used-compact-system-cameras/used-sony-compact-system-cameras/sony-alpha-a6000/sku-826658/
