Can a DSLR with a small LCD screen be left on for extended periods without draining the battery?

The battery does drain when left on, but no where as quick as it does, if you were using the camera.

That's what happen to me. I forgot to shut mine off from yesterday, and it was on all night. I just don't want to go out today to take some pictures and the battery dies after 5 shots.

You should be fine, but in the meantime charge it before you go out.

That is also why you should have a 2nd battery.

Your camera has a sleep mode. similar to your PC. You can set the length of time before it goes to sleep. Once in that mode, it uses little juice but takes a second to wake up - just like turning it on. Some folks who are out in the field where occasional shots "pop up", set a long time period or disable the sleep mode so they are always ready.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.
