I do this every year for a contest that requires "dry mounted" prints with no borders or mats. It is amazing how many other photographers have asked me how to do it.
Now I can refer them to this video.
Thanks.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Hey Mark,
Great video! You make it look easy.
I was wondering...can foam core be used in a frame? If so, would you leave a white border around the print to look like a mat?

Hi bdphotodesign,

Yes, the foam core can be used in a frame and I have mounted photos like that for framing many times for people. I work in advertising and do this pretty much on a daily basis in the mount room. The great thing about 3/16" foam is that it will slide perfectly in a metal frame and you don't need to use the clips that come with the frame.

Hi Betty

Hope you don't mind someone else answering your question. I mount prints all the time and I always leave a 2.5-3 inch area around the print and then put a mat over the print. If you don't actually use a mat, it won't look like a mat with just the foamcore under the print.

And it is very true what Mark said about making sure your blade is sharp. They can get dull very quick. What helps is if you have a cutting mat underneath your photo when you cut, then you don't have to worry about your blade getting dull too quick. And if you do have a cutting mat, make sure it is free of any loose paper or cardboard or foam remnants. If your blade catches onto a piece, it may make your blade jump out of place or actually rip out the foam from the line of your cut. One tip I can give if you only have a box cutter-type blade is to gradually cut through the foam so you won't mess up the cut. Just make sure the blade is perpendicular to the table and take your time! You don't have to cut through with one slice. That's how mistakes are made!

Excellent tips on dry mounting but i do have one important safety recommendation. read the Material Safety Data Sheet for the 3M Scotch 77 dry mounting spray. this stuff is great but it is toxic. i always without exception use a particle dust mask while spraying this toxic gas and i never spray it inside a building. two clothing pins and a clothing line will hold up any print without the assistance of anyone else. limiting your exposure to this toxic gas is essential.

Mounting photography is nothing but places your photos on a hard surface. You can protect your photos against moisture, wind and other elements by mounting them. The multitude of options you have when selecting a photo montage of Directors makes it the versatile.
