Why are my Photoshop filters all grayed out and un-clickable?

7 years 4 months ago #268942 by iGeek
I'm in Photoshop CS6 right now and nearly all my filters are all grayed out and un-clickable. I have a photo open and area selected and normally I should have plenty of filter options. I have nearly all my filter options in gray right now.

Help please

:thx:

I just had to figure this one out myself. It's because you're not in 8-bit mode.

In CS3 it's under Image/Mode: set the bits/channel to 8.

Don't understand why they don't work in other modes, but this should make them all show up.

Yeah one of the things I have complained to Adobe about over the years, is that sometimes you need to have been one of the programmers to figure out why something was grayed out. Their problem is they are just programmers without the understanding that many of the end users are not. And their Help is not help most of the time. Thankfully I have been using it since 2.0 and have read all the books decoding the the inner mysteries.

Some of those filters were programmed many years ago. They don't get updated so they only work in 8 bit.
