Wordpress websites for photographers

Are most the turn key sites for photographers based around Wordpress?   Are there any downsides to a Wordpress site?

My guess would be that most dedicated sites are not Wordpress. Wordpress has at least a couple of downsides. Hosting, room for confusion and error here. I have WP on my own host (happens to be Arvixe). So I am in complete control. And the thing will be up there so long as Arvixe stays in business. A lot of those turn key sites provide the hosting for you. Which greatly simplifies things for you, again, so long as they are in business. WP itself will also provide hosting, that is really meant for personal blogs, I doubt that many commercial sites use WP as the host. So take care in selecting your host!

The other arguable downside to WP is the frequent updates. WP sites typically use a theme plus a smattering of plug-ins. Hopefully these 3rd party developers keep their stuff compatible with the latest WP update. But there is no guarantee of that.

I'd echo what Kelly said. WP is a great, flexible platform, but it's a pain in the ass to manage. I manage a couple of WP websites and it makes me want to pull my hair out. If you're looking for simple, look at places like Smugmug that are all-in-one packages for photographers. There are website builders too like Squarespace and Wix that are much more user friendly and will probably take much less time to build a website/portfolio.

If you're looking for turnkey I'd go with the suggestion of a website builder like was recommended by others. Wordpress isn't turnkey but with a website builder you often just have to replace what's in the template with your information/text/photos/etc. and you're good to go.

Definitely agree with all of this. Wordpress sites can be great, but it's not as intuitive as many of the other services available for photographers.
