Post-processing in Lightroom: underexposed photos

7 years 4 months ago #507703 by nicolasnico
hello everyone,
my question is about post-processing a picture that underexposed. Generally, my pictures are underexposed so as to bring up (while shooting) the colors I see with my eyes. Requires then postprocessing. Now, I've been struggling with the picture here enclosed. When I change the exposer (in Lightroom), the colors become maybe unreal, I loose the areas of shades vs light...
Any advice? (I'd be interseted to work that out with someone). Thanks!

I would send you the dng file, but it seems it's not possible to upload them here as attachment.

I would add just a touch to the global exposure, then play around with the highlight and shadow filters to get the right amount of light. As far as colors go, you always adjust the saturation and vibrance. If one color in particular is bothering you, you can always go in and strengthen or weaken it on an individual level. Hope that helps.

Obviously some exposure adjustment will be needed at some point. But, in this case, I would start out increasing the contrast (quite a bit). Tweak the exposure later.

I brought the JPG up in ACR but it relates to Lightroom almost the exact same. In Lightroom I would adjust the contrast in the tone panel and set it to medium instead of using the contrast slider but here is what I would do in ACR.

white balance - warm it up just a tad
tint- move a couple of points to the green
Exposure +0.40
contrast 15
Highlights +30
shadows 0
whites 30
blacks 0
clarity 15

HSL PANEL
SATURATION
YELLOW 15
GREEN 30

LUMINANCE
YELLOW 25
GREEN 15

VIGNETTE -10
