To preserve the original photo, what is the easiest and best (if one exist) way to non destructively sharpen photos in Photoshop please?

Thank you for your help.

Duplicate a finished image layer and apply sharpening of your choice to the duplicate layer. You can use the high pass method, unsharp mask, smart sharpen or any other sharpening program on this layer. This technique allows you to mask in or mask out the areas that you want sharpened or not sharpened. Layers and masks are about the only reason Photoshop is needed over Lightroom.

The question is unclear.

If you are looking for a method by which to apply a sharpening technique, it depends upon the technique.

For high-pass you can use a layer copy, high-pass filter, and adjust the layer and use masking.

for unsharp mask sharpening, however, you might want to create a smart object and apply the filter to that.  Note that you can nest smart obects within smart objects, in case you need to utilize masking for your sharpening.

I always use layer mask with high pass filter.  Seems like many are using the same method.

I almost always opt for the layer copy and high pass...just the easiest way of doing things without a fuss.

Use layer mask and high pass filter on the areas which you want to sharpen as this can be said as one of the easiest technique that can help at its best. This will not destruct your image.

Technically the best way is Frequency Separation sharpening.

Similar to High-Pass filtering, but doesn't mess with the colors and more mathematically accurate.

Old guide here, but they've messed the pictures up.
