Help me understand a color grading style!

6 years 2 months ago #563192 by JohnGC
So I am new to photography but yet very ambitious. The latest months that I have been an active instagram user I have noticed that pictures like this really are trending. Most of the not for their composition but for their in fashion color grading. I personally am quite basic at photoshop so I use lightroom where I feel more comfortable.

I have these questions:
>What is this style called (so I can search and learn how to make it)
>Could it be done quite as good in lightroom?
>What is your opinion about it?

Thanks in advance for your time and answers!

I don't know that there's a "style" here.

There is an orange tone in the mids/highlights, and cyan/blue in the shadows. Also, the blacks have been crushed a bit and contrast lowered.

Aside from trying to adopt the same editing style as everyone else, you might look at learning how to generally grade and edit. Lots of tutorials out there.

I have some general knowledge... I am simply interested in this particular style cause I see it everywhere lately... When you say crushed you mean they have been brightened, right?

If you look at the sky its clear to see that 2/3 are orangy and 1/3 is bluish... How can you do that?

Split toning with a mask. Cyan for shadows and orange for the highlights. Could also be done with a color gradient and a mask. If you want "crushed blacks" you go to the tone curve and move the left end point up about 10% and make a flat line for about 10% to the right. It crushes the detail in the darkest shadows and gives a mat like look to the blacks.

How do you do the whole thing with the masked split toning in detail (and step by step)
