Difference between save and save as?

I've been working on my Photoshop skills and one question I've been meaning to ask has to do with saving my files.  Why have 2 different saves?  From what I can see both do the same thing?  Save the file.

Or is there something more at programmic/advance level that I'm not seeing?

This convention is the same for every program on every computer system everywhere. It's been this way for years for many applications. Not sure how there's any lack of clarity, nor inconsistency, here. Nonetheless:

"Save" will save the current document in the current format to the current named file.

"Save As" let's you change any of those by presenting a dialog in which you may may your changes, including location. Save does none of that.
