JPEG vs PNG for website portfolio?

Will it make any difference to have one format over another when adding photos to your website portfolio?  Are there benefits of using one over the other?

JPGs use lossy compression, which means that, unless you crank the quality up to 100%, you're going to lose information. PNGs have no such problem, as their compression is lossless.

If you display a JPG and a PNG on your own site and see no difference, then no, it doesn't matter.

However, it matters on other sites that severely compress your uploaded image before displaying them. Facebook, Instagram, etc all do horrible damage to your images. So you want to start with the best you can. For me, that means PNGs of reasonable size. It helps keep the damage to a minimum.

But for your own site, JPGs are smaller in size, require less bandwidth, your page will load faster, etc. You have to decide if that matters to you.

:agree:  good point Gary.  Honestly I forgot that Facebook is still compressing photos.  I thought they scaled back on that after all the complaints.

I don't know about that; my settings and workflow are the same as they've always been. Mine look reasonably good.

They still compress photos.  They just reduced the saturation from what I picked up.

Nikon Z6 | Nikon FM10 | Nikon D80 | Nikon 50mm f/1.8D | Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S VR | 35-105mm f/3.5 Macro | 80-200mm f/4.5 | SB600 | Pocket Wizard II

Define "picked up"?

Compression doesn't affect saturation. Never has. And googling didn't find any obvious discussion of any change.

Please excuse the late response.  I've been traveling.  Thank you for the answers.  Very clear now.  So I have read a little bit further on this too.  Now if you wanted to serve larger images.  Have you tried one of those CDN services?  If I understood this correctly, your images load quicker.

I don't know what a CDN service is. But you can't load an image faster if it's larger. The only way you can do so is by compressing it. Which was the point of my comments, above. Everything costs something.

The greatest advantage of pings is that they support
transparency… this feature may be of importance in
the pictorial aspect of web design.

For my portfolio, web or device, I use only jpg's.

Light is free… capturing it is not!
