Me, I add a caption to a photo and set transparency. Guess, plenty of software can do this.

If I have one in the photo, it's place somewhere on the bottom where it's out of the way and doesn't interfere with the photo or take from it.

That's because we (a) probably over-value our images, and (b) think that's going to stop someone from misappropriating an image.

When I am using watermarks, I just try to keep things somewhat discreet. While it's important keep your images safe, you want people looking at your image, not your name. I agree with what the others say, placement depends on image itself
