Need help selecting printing paper for photos that are bright black & white

5 years 4 months ago #614467 by Happy-pixel
Have have a series of black and white prints that are rather bright for being black and white.  I'm ok with mat or semi-gloss or even pearl finish.  Not sure about ultra gloss.  Just want to make sure I'm getting something that is true white.

These photos will be in an upcoming art gallery.

Thanks

Most paper has a color cast. You'll need to decide whether you want warm or cool.

I don't understand what you mean by "rather bright". White is white.

Me, I like my B&W prints to be cool.

That said, I'm a big fan of Red River paper. The San Gabriel is quite nice, and I love their Polar anything.  If you have lots of blacks with detail, suggest a gloss finish.

Pearl and lustre are okay in that they minimize reflections. But I prefer a good matte paper over that.

Red River, Hahnemuhle, Moab all have sample packs if you're printing your own. If you're using a lab, your choices will be limited.

N.B. "white" will be influenced by the viewing environment. Ideally you will have 5500K lights for the prints.

Try Canson papers especially "Baryta Photographic 310g" and "Platine Fibre Rag 310g" - you can usually get a discovery pack here: www.canson-infinity.com/en/products/discovery-packs . Important to use their printing profiles.

MMy opinionBlack and white is usually best on two papers. If there is lots of contrast and detail, a high gloss works best. If not high gloss paper, then a matte paper with the highest Dmax you can get. Middle of the road semi-gloss or satin usually produces blah black and white images.

I don't suppose any of you know that paper that feels like canvas?

My Camera Bag:

Canon 7D | 50mm f/1.2 | 17-40mm f/4 | 70-200mm f/2.8 | 320EX | 580EXII

No such animal. Paper and canvas are two different things. Paper is superior with respect to feel. Not that most people feel their prints. It's more about the look and the desire to touch it.

I agree with this.
