Printing photo 80" x 62" - What can be done from camera?

5 years 1 month ago #635433 by Jakov Barnes
If you want to print something 80x62" on metal or acrylic, what size of image would be needed from the camera?  I'm talking something to be very sharp and look as real as it did in person.

3000 x 6000 (made up number), what size is needed?

Get in camera the best take possible and then consider the
viewing distance of the final print.

Examples.

For an A4, or 8x10, viewed pretty close, you will need +/- 300 ppi —
3002 x80 = 7,2 MP

For a very large poster. viewed from quite a distance: 72 ppi —
7,2 MP / 722 = 1 388.892 inches.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

As stated, it depends upon viewing distance. You don't look at seven foot wide image from two feet away (to enjoy it).

One could probably get away with 150 dpi for something like that, but that still means > 100MP. 4 shots with a D850, stitched together, would do the trick.

At 300 dpi, that (almost) 5000 square inches would require 450MP.

N.B. medium format cameras are used to produce images for billboards.

Unless you use your iPhone. LMAO. Seriously didn't apple claim a few years ago that they made a billboard photo using an iPhone?

It should be no problem if you have a halfway decent camera. Of course the more megapixels, the better it will look. Printing images that size will most likely be run through a RIP to print the image. They can do a good job of making a small image look good when printed large.

I saw the side of a 3 or 4 story building covered with a "shot on an iPhone" image a couple of years ago. I was 30 yards away. It looked fine, mostly because of subject matter (not complex) and whatever they did to reproduce it.

In a single frame that you would normally use a wide angle, break out your 70-200mm and by following a circular motion, overlapping the last photo, snap away, 15-20 shots depending on size of the frame and your going to be golden for a super high resolution large print.

A shot that would normally fit in one shot, zoom in with larger focal length and shot 5 or 7 shots and cover the same space that would have been gotten with the one shot from above. Don't forget to overlap your shots by 20% or so.
