Output sharpening in Lightroom?

4 years 10 months ago #645441 by Dana Beasley
Good morning.

I've noticed however haven't used the output sharpening feature in Lightroom.  Now I have tried it and from what I can see, it's applying a mild sharping.

When is output sharpening particularly used the most? When downsizing images from the original size?

Mild sharpening is never a problem but heavy sharpening
will artefact your pictures what ever the output size.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

When I resize an image, I'll select Output sharpening.

Common technique dictates sharpening at three times:

1) general image sharpening in post
2) targeted sharpening in specific areas that require it
3) output sharpening appropriate to the target media

You should always using output sharpening, selected for what you're doing. For example, if you're printing to matte material, you'll get different sharpening than glossy material.

And of course, don't get carried away. I leave LR's output sharpening set to low most of the time, sometimes standard.

I won't mess with the sharpening most of the time because I have adjusted the sharpening from within LR or Photoshop.
