Waves of color in sky in Lightroom Classic

I have a photo that has been edited and while in Lightroom Classic has these color waves in the sky.  Yet when I open the exact same photo in Photoshop, those waves disappear.  Why is that?

That's called banding, and it happens when you have large fields of mostly solid color that are being compressed.

That image you see on screen? That fits within the LR window? It's shrunk and compressed. Blow it up to 100% with a 1:1 preview, and you likely won't see the same problem. Or not to the same degree, I think.

When you're in PS and viewing at 100% you are getting a different render out of PS than what LR shows you. Different results would be expected, right?

Significant saturation enhancement will exacerbate the problem. Therefore: don't. You'll have to export the image using different settings (size, quality) to determine how big the problem is. Many folks add noise (grain) to the image to mitigate the problem. It helps to some degree.

Having a good starting point in a RAW image, and trying different techniques and steps will lead you to a methodology that will tame the problem in a way that works for you. Experiment.
